The Cornerstone

...Go back to previous page

You may have passed it hundreds of times on your way in and out of St. Patrick;s.  Near the entrance of the chruch sits a stone, light in color, mounted on a small brick structure.  For 53 years, it served as the cornerstone of the second St. Patrick Church.

When the church was destroyed by fire in 1927, the cornerstone remained and someone (possibly Father William Duhigg, the first Pastor of Sts. Philip and james and its mission church, St. Patrick) retrieved it.  The cornerstone was stored at Sts. Philip and James for almost half a century, until workmen, unaware of its significance, moved the stone from "a barn-like structure," where they were working, onto the grass.

Eventually, an area resident noticed the inscription on the stone and realized that it was a piece of St. Patrick's history.  Sts. Philip and James pastor, Father Richard Hendel, loaded the stone into his car and presented it to St. Patrick;s pastor, Father John Mott.  Father Mott had the cornerstone installed on the parish grounds, where it remains today.

You can read an accounting of the find in a local newpaper article..
