Twenty-Sixth Sunday
in Ordinary Time

 Recognizing our Volunteers

Many of our volunteers were recently recognized at both the parish level and the diocesan level.  Pictured at top right with Fr. Patrick and Fr. Walden are Bill and Ida Minerva who were this year’s recipients of the St. Agnes Medal of Service.  Bishop William Murphy honors one individual or married couple from each parish  with the award “whose love of the Church has been shown through their devotion to the Holy Father, to our diocese and to their parish.”  Bishop Murphy called the honorees the “unsung heroes in our midst who build up our parish community by extraordinary service in parish ministry, parish administration or some significant volunteer role.”  Pictured middle right, volunteers involved with religious instruction were recognized on “Catechetical Sunday” at the 10:30 AM Mass.  These volunteers along with the staff of our Religious Formation Center and St. Patrick School are responsible along with parents and family for ensuring that our faith is passed on to the next generation.

Thank you to all our volunteers!

A Message from Msgr. Walden Regarding Changes Due to the Flu Season

Blessed with the gift of faith, we come to mass each week and sometimes every day for our spiritual nourishment and spiritual health.  With the current concern about the flu season coming and the swine flu, we need to be prudent and take steps to make sure we are doing what we can to prevent the spread of germs at our masses and gatherings.  In reflecting on this situation and talking with many people, including our Parish Council, we will make some temporary changes in what we do at mass and in our church until the flu season is over.  We have ordered hand sanitizers for each of the doors in the church which anyone can use who enters or leaves the church.  During this time we will not offer the Precious Blood from the cup, since many mouths touch the cup for the reception of the Blood of Christ.  We will install a hand sanitizer on the wall in back of the altar and all those distributing communion will wash their hands before and after they distribute the Body of Christ in the hosts.  At the sign of peace we encourage you to turn to the people next to you who are not your family and nod with your head and say, “Peace be with you.”  At the end of mass the priests will be at the door and greet you.  If you wish to shake our hands that is fine.  Know that we will wash our hands frequently.  These are temporary measures for good health and concern for one another.  As soon as the flu season is over we will return to our present practices.

Church Tile Work: Almost Done!

Under Construction Sign

This is the last Sunday we will have no pews in one section of the church.  Tomorrow (Monday, September, 28th) the last set of pews will be reinstalled.  Following that a professional cleaning crew will come in to put the church back in good condition.  There is dust all over.  The cleaning will take until Thursday evening.  Beginning Friday morning with the 6:45 AM mass we will back in the church.  Thank you for your patience and understanding.  Now the floor is the way it should have been from the very beginning.

The letter may be accessed online at:
www.stpatricksmithtown.org/home/archive/home_-_2009-08-02/#DESK

Now that school is open and our religious education classes will start, we will have the following procedure for coming to weekday mass in the Emmaus Room.  This procedure will be followed until we return to the church building on September 29th.

The outside entrance into the school hall will remain the same: the doors on the southwest corner of the school.  These doors will be open for 6:45 AM mass each day and locked at 7:30 AM.  They will be reopened at 8:45 AM and locked at 9:45 AM.  They will be reopened at 11:45 AM and locked at 12:45 PM.  The school will not be open during the day for visits to the Blessed Sacrament.  On Saturday, September 19th and Saturday, September 26th the southwest doors will be opened at 8:45 AM and locked after mass at 9:45 AM since children will be in the building at that time for our religious education program. On Monday evenings beginning September 14th, we will open the southwest doors at 7:00 PM and lock them at 8:15 PM. We are following this procedure to keep the school secure.  A new security system has been installed for the safety of the children who are entrusted to us.  I apologize for any inconvenience.  This procedure is only for three weeks since the work on the church should be completed by September 28th. I ask for your cooperation and understanding for the safety of the children and the security of our school building. Weekday Mass in Emmaus Room - Now through September 28th.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation!

Social Ministry
Rainbows and Spectrum

Today in the United States, there are more than 20 million children living in a single parent family - more than that if you include those children in a step-family.  That is 1 in every 3 in our classrooms!  In time to come many more children will have had to cope with the anguish of losing one of their parents through death, divorce or being born out of wedlock.

Children learn from their hearts upward; thus, if a child hurts emotionally, he/she often has difficulty in school.  In addition, statistics already show that a vast majority of these grieving children are turning to drugs, alcohol and even suicide as a means of coping.

Through the support group, we hope to assist the child in expressing and understanding his/her feelings, feel acceptance for what has happened, and to feel a sense of belonging and love.  Because we are unable to answer their questions or solve their problems, we strive to accomplish this through the channels of peer support, nurturing adults to guide them, and a secure place to share themselves.

St. Patrick Parish Outreach is proud to announce the start of another year of Rainbows and Spectrum (the High School level).  Registration is now taking place.  Call Parish Outreach at 265-2668 for further information.

Fr. Walden

From the Pastor's Desk:

Each morning I pray morning prayer from the Breviary.  This prayer begins with two psalms with another passage from scripture in between.  A week ago Saturday the passage between the psalms was from the prophet Ezekiel.  In it it said, “I will give you a new heart and place a new spirit within you, taking from your bodies your stony hearts and giving you natural hearts.”  I began to reflect on what exactly is a natural heart.  The heart spoken of here is not the organ with the four chambers that pumps blood through our bodies, but the center and core of our being where we find the motive for what we do and see who we truly are.  What is a natural heart?  Is it more natural to be loving or hateful?  Is it more natural to be understanding or suspicious?  Is it more natural to be selfish or generous?  Is it more natural to be forgiving or spiteful?  Is it more natural to think of others first or ourselves first?  Is it more natural to see the good in others or to talk about what we don’t like in them?  Is it more natural to get even with the person on our rear bumper on the expressway or to pull over and let him go by?  The natural heart Ezekiel is speaking of is the heart God has given us in creating us in his own image.  This heart is seen so vividly in the Sacred Heart of Jesus.  There we see the epitome of what a natural heart is.  It was from his heart on the cross that he said, “Father forgive them, for they know not what they do.”  To St. John and his mother he said, “Son there is your mother, mother, there is your son.”  To the “good thief,” “This day you will be with me in paradise.”  In the midst of complete injustice, rejection and cruelty he remained a person of love.  That is what a natural heart enables us to do.  Too often we have the stony heart, a hard heart, where we close ourselves off to the needs of others.  Some people do take a lot of time and energy.  Others hurt or disappoint us.  But when we walk away or close our hearts, there is the gnawing feeling of guilt or anxiety that we should have done something.  That is a sign that we need that natural heart to be fully alive and at peace with God and one another. It is the natural heart God has given us that brings us into his life.  It is the natural heart that makes God’s presence so clear in our lives.  Last Monday we celebrated the feast of St. Matthew.  The gospel for that day was the familiar passage where Jesus walked by the Matthew’s custom station and said to him, “Follow me.”  Matthew responded immediately and got up and followed him.  Because he followed his natural heart the invitation from Jesus was a source of joy.  There was no fear, quibbling or hesitancy.  Matthew became one of the twelve apostles and the author of one of the four gospels.  Once Jesus called Matthew, Matthew became a part of the life of Jesus.  Then the other key experience happened.  Matthew invited Jesus to be part of his life.  Jesus went to the house of Matthew and was criticized by the Pharisees for eating with tax collectors and sinners.  That did not deter Matthew from inviting Jesus or Jesus from accepting his invitation.  We too are invited to be part of the life of Jesus.  That invitation was accepted for us at baptism.  Like Matthew, to complete the acceptance of Jesus’ invitation, we need to invite Jesus into our lives.  That means far more than praying everyday and coming to mass every week.  These can give us a false sense of security in that we think we are keeping God happy.  To invite Jesus into our lives is to allow him into all we are, all we have, all we say, and all we do.  It means having Jesus in our homes, at work, in the car, in the supermarket, on the soccer field and wherever else we are.  Jesus always accepts our invitation.  We do not always want him where we are or we get so immersed in what we think and what we are doing that we are not nurtured and encouraged by his presence.  Jesus is with us not to keep us in line or to remind us that failure to be faithful to him can result in eternal separation from him.  The last thing Jesus, with his natural, Sacred Heart does, is to make our lives burdensome, depressing or fearful.  Jesus is with us to love us into being.  It is his presence that gives us the life and desire to do what he did naturally: to do all things with unconditional, life-giving love.  Animated by our natural hearts we live more and more fully as the children of God.  That is exactly what God created us to be and why Jesus invites us to follow him.  It is unnatural to live any other way.
