A Message from Msgr. Walden Regarding Changes Due to the Flu Season

Blessed with the gift of faith, we come to mass each week and sometimes every day for our spiritual nourishment and spiritual health.  With the current concern about the flu season coming and the swine flu, we need to be prudent and take steps to make sure we are doing what we can to prevent the spread of germs at our masses and gatherings.  In reflecting on this situation and talking with many people, including our Parish Council, we will make some temporary changes in what we do at mass and in our church until the flu season is over.  We have ordered hand sanitizers for each of the doors in the church which anyone can use who enters or leaves the church.  During this time we will not offer the Precious Blood from the cup, since many mouths touch the cup for the reception of the Blood of Christ.  We will install a hand sanitizer on the wall in back of the altar and all those distributing communion will wash their hands before and after they distribute the Body of Christ in the hosts.  At the sign of peace we encourage you to turn to the people next to you who are not your family and nod with your head and say, “Peace be with you.”  At the end of mass the priests will be at the door and greet you.  If you wish to shake our hands that is fine.  Know that we will wash our hands frequently.  These are temporary measures for good health and concern for one another.  As soon as the flu season is over we will return to our present practices.

Church Tile Work: Almost Done!

Under Construction Sign

This is the last Sunday we will have no pews in one section of the church.  Tomorrow (Monday, September, 28th) the last set of pews will be reinstalled.  Following that a professional cleaning crew will come in to put the church back in good condition.  There is dust all over.  The cleaning will take until Thursday evening.  Beginning Friday morning with the 6:45 AM mass we will back in the church.  Thank you for your patience and understanding.  Now the floor is the way it should have been from the very beginning.

The letter may be accessed online at:
www.stpatricksmithtown.org/home/archive/home_-_2009-08-02/#DESK

Now that school is open and our religious education classes will start, we will have the following procedure for coming to weekday mass in the Emmaus Room.  This procedure will be followed until we return to the church building on September 29th.

The outside entrance into the school hall will remain the same: the doors on the southwest corner of the school.  These doors will be open for 6:45 AM mass each day and locked at 7:30 AM.  They will be reopened at 8:45 AM and locked at 9:45 AM.  They will be reopened at 11:45 AM and locked at 12:45 PM.  The school will not be open during the day for visits to the Blessed Sacrament.  On Saturday, September 19th and Saturday, September 26th the southwest doors will be opened at 8:45 AM and locked after mass at 9:45 AM since children will be in the building at that time for our religious education program. On Monday evenings beginning September 14th, we will open the southwest doors at 7:00 PM and lock them at 8:15 PM. We are following this procedure to keep the school secure.  A new security system has been installed for the safety of the children who are entrusted to us.  I apologize for any inconvenience.  This procedure is only for three weeks since the work on the church should be completed by September 28th. I ask for your cooperation and understanding for the safety of the children and the security of our school building. Weekday Mass in Emmaus Room - Now through September 28th.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation!

St. Michael Church of Brooklyn

St. Michael’s  Benefit Concert

Sunday, November 8th

St. Michael’s Parish in Brooklyn is holding a Benefit Concert featuring Karl Scully of The Irish Tenors and Deirdre Masterson of The Irish Sopranos on Sunday, November 8th at 3:30 PM.  The day will include a reception with an open bar, hors d’oeuvres, dessert and dancing. A bus will once again be provided for those from our parish who wish to attend.

What is the St. Patrick’s connection with St. Michael’s?  Several years ago, Holy Mother Mary Council of the Knights of Columbus, St. Patrick’s council, learned that a young seminarian needed help.  His parents had died and his brothers and sisters, policemen and firemen, were struggling to help their youngest brother in the seminary.  The Knights rallied to his support and with God’s help he was ordained a priest.  This warm and loving priest came out to Smithtown to say an outdoor Mass every summer in gratitude for the Knights’ help, even bringing bagels from Brooklyn.  Soon, Fr. Patrick was named pastor of an aging church in the Sunset Park section of Brooklyn.  The church, which was at the time “everything” to the immigrants from Ireland and Italy, is now home to another phase of immigrants.  It is being lovingly restored and repaired by this giving priest.  One way Father raises money is by arranging a fundraising concert, featuring well known musicians.  Father reaches out to friends in Smithtown, the NYPD and NYFD and others to help sell tickets.  Devoted St. Michael’s parishioners volunteer to usher, clean up, serve, etc.  After the concert, there is a reception.  Father joins those in attendance.  His warm and thankful presence adds to the spirit of the day.  Please join in supporting the good people of St. Michael’s and a wonderful priest.  The cost for the concert, reception and bus transportation is $120.  The bus will leave St. Patrick’s at 1 PM.  For more information or to reserve your spot, call Tom or Eileen

The Parish of St. Patrick invites all our parishioners who are celebrating their 25th, 40th, 50th or 55th-plus Wedding Anniversary this year to a special Mass on Sunday, October 11th at 1:15 PM, followed by a reception in Canning Hall. Fr. Walden

From the Pastor's Desk:

One of the joys in life is to experience unity with one another.  Each time we sing a patriotic hymn at the end of mass most people stay and sing.  It reminds us of the bond we have as Americans.  When we gather with our family and friends for special events, we are uplifted simply by the presence of one another.  Each time we come to mass we gather as the family of God to express our thanks and to once again experience the loving presence of God in Word, sacrament and one another.  Our common bonds are a source of security and peace for us.

Today’s gospel speaks of a common bond that breaks at times and causes much anguish and hurt - divorce.  In the scriptures Jesus is the only one who specially speaks out against divorce.  What Jesus is doing of course is holding up the ideal and once again emphasizing what he came to do - to unite us with God and one another.  At times marriages do fall apart and husband and wife go their separate ways.  That is certainly not an easy decision or something that was planned on the day of marriage.  Disappointment, anger, feelings of abandonment and betrayal are all part of the experience.  It goes against our nature to become one in mind and heart and then see and experience that unity fall apart.  Jesus does not want us to experience that pain, but it is a reality.  Jesus is firm and gentle.  Because his purpose was to restore the original unity God created and intended, he speaks out against divorce.  He does not want us to have all those negative thoughts and feelings that come with divorce.  He wants us to know the loving union he has with the Father and to experience that with one another and with Him.  When God’s people divorced themselves from him through their unfaithfulness in the Old Testament, he promised to restore them and bring them back to where they were in their life with him.  His compassionate and merciful love did not condemn his people, but opened their minds and hearts to who they were as his people and whose they were as people of faith.  To get beyond all that is hurtful and divisive we need the power and presence of the resurrected Christ.

Today many people will stand together on Route 110 in Huntington and near exit 70 on the LIE to speak up for the unborn and to speak out against the evil of abortion.  Abortion is a divisive issue in our nation.  Division is a sign that evil is alive and well.  In arguing with one another we are blinding ourselves to the reality of the evil, the taking of human life in the womb.  The second part of today’s gospel speaks of people bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them.  The disciples try to shoo the parents and children away.  Is that not what happens when an abortion is performed?  A child is pushed away from us and our world.  Jesus says, “Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to just such as these.”  How beautiful to experience the joy of seeing children being loved.  We have all been touched and uplifted by beholding an infant child.  That source of joy is also a call for great love.  An infant needs constant care and attention just to survive.  Yet we gladly give of ourselves to them and for them.  How many sleepless nights and long days have you willingly endured as parents for your children.  Right there we see the kingdom of God in little children: they call forth from us love that is so much a part of us and wants to come out of our hearts.  That unconditional love does far more than just keep the child alive.  It nurtures him or her and enables him or her to grow in wisdom and grace.

Our invitation and opportunity today is to perform a public act of love for all children threatened by abortion by taking the time to stand up, witness and pray for them.  They are inviting us to know the bond of God’s love and concern for them.  The road is long and hard.  Almost 50 million lives have been taken through this legal, divisive action.  Like Jesus, we seek unity in truth and love for ourselves, those whose lives are threatened or abused and all those who promote, perform and support abortion.
