The Second Sunday of Advent

 ADVENT ARRIVES!

 Lighting of the Advent Wreath

(Top Row, left)  The tradition at St. Patricks of lighting the candles of the Advent Wreath continued last Sunday, November 29th, the first Sunday of Advent.  During each Mass, a child of the parish lights the candles of the wreath by the altar.

 The Prophet Isaiah Returns!

(Top Row, Right)  The “Prophet Isaiah” author of many of the scripture readings during the advent season, made his annual appearance at the 5 PM Mass on Saturday, November 28th.  Isaiah will return to speak with the children each week during advent.

Lighting of the Creche and Christmas Tree

(Rows 2 & 3, Left)  Parishioners gathered for the lighting of the creche and Christmas tree following the 5 PM Mass last Saturday.  Afterwards hot chocolate provided some warmth and christmas cheer.

 “Reach for a Star”

(Row 3, Right)  Parishioners were seen taking stars from our Reach for a Star trees.  Each star has a Christmas gift request from a family in need in our area.  The gifts will be placed by the altar and distibuted by our Parish Outreach before Christmas.

 New Altar Servers Installed

(Row 4)  Our newest altar servers were installed at the 10:30 AM Mass on Sunday, November 28th.  Altar servers who just completed their training this fall as well as those who were trained last spring participated in the commissioning.

Thanksgiving Dinners for Those in Need

(Row 5)  Thank you to the many people who helped put a Thanksgiving Dinner on the tables of more than 75 area families currently experiencing financial hardship.  A special thanks to our Outreach volunteers, pictured above, who put the dinners together and delivered many of them.

 Student Wins CMA Essay Contest

(Row 6)  St. Patrick’ parishioner and St. Patrick School student Colin Mortimer was the winner of the Catholic Ministries Appeal’s Voice of our Youth Essay Contest.  Young people ages 12 to 17 throughout the diocese were invited to write about how they see the Catholic Ministries Appeal at work in their communities, schools and parishes.  Colin read his essay at a recent CMA Thank You Luncheon where the Mortimer family was able to visit with former St. Patrick’s pastor, Bishop Paul Walsh.  The essay will also be published in The Long Island Catholic, the CMA newsletter and on the CMA website.  Congratulations Colin!  Photos courtesy of Gregory A. Shemitz, 3VPhoto.com

 St. Patrick School Sports Awards

(Row 7)  Eighth grade students who represented St. Patrick School on a fall sports team posed for a picture at the Fall Sports Awards Night.  St. Patrick students in grades 6 through 8 competed in boys and girls soccer and cross country.  Special awards went to the following students: Girls’ Soccer Most Valuable Player - Taylor Singer; Girls’ Soccer Coaches’ Award - Emily Helldorfer; Boys’ Soccer Most Valuable Player - Andrew Mundy; Boys’ Soccer Coaches’ Award - Douglas Toledo; Cross Country Most Valuable Player - Thomas Louro; Cross Country Coaches Award - Morgan Haberfield. A Message from Msgr. Walden Regarding Changes Due to the Flu Season

Blessed with the gift of faith, we come to mass each week and sometimes every day for our spiritual nourishment and spiritual health.  With the current concern about the flu season coming and the swine flu, we need to be prudent and take steps to make sure we are doing what we can to prevent the spread of germs at our masses and gatherings.  In reflecting on this situation and talking with many people, including our Parish Council, we will make some temporary changes in what we do at mass and in our church until the flu season is over.  We have ordered hand sanitizers for each of the doors in the church which anyone can use who enters or leaves the church.  During this time we will not offer the Precious Blood from the cup, since many mouths touch the cup for the reception of the Blood of Christ.  We will install a hand sanitizer on the wall in back of the altar and all those distributing communion will wash their hands before and after they distribute the Body of Christ in the hosts.  At the sign of peace we encourage you to turn to the people next to you who are not your family and nod with your head and say, “Peace be with you.”  At the end of mass the priests will be at the door and greet you.  If you wish to shake our hands that is fine.  Know that we will wash our hands frequently.  These are temporary measures for good health and concern for one another.  As soon as the flu season is over we will return to our present practices.

Social Ministry
Rainbows and Spectrum

Today in the United States, there are more than 20 million children living in a single parent family - more than that if you include those children in a step-family.  That is 1 in every 3 in our classrooms!  In time to come many more children will have had to cope with the anguish of losing one of their parents through death, divorce or being born out of wedlock.

Children learn from their hearts upward; thus, if a child hurts emotionally, he/she often has difficulty in school.  In addition, statistics already show that a vast majority of these grieving children are turning to drugs, alcohol and even suicide as a means of coping.

Through the support group, we hope to assist the child in expressing and understanding his/her feelings, feel acceptance for what has happened, and to feel a sense of belonging and love.  Because we are unable to answer their questions or solve their problems, we strive to accomplish this through the channels of peer support, nurturing adults to guide them, and a secure place to share themselves.

St. Patrick Parish Outreach is proud to announce the start of another year of Rainbows and Spectrum (the High School level).  Registration is now taking place.  Call Parish Outreach at 265-2668 for further information.

Fr. Walden

From the Pastor's Desk:

As we continue our journey through Advent, we listen to the prophet Baruch in the first reading today telling us: “for God has commanded that every lofty mountain be made low, and the age-old depths and gorges be filled to level ground, that Israel may advance secure in the glory of the God.”  God wants to remove all the obstacles that keep us from recognizing his loving presence in our midst and take us away from him and each other.  At times in their history, the Jewish people lost sight of who they were and how they became a people.  God brought them out of slavery and on their journey to the promised land gave them the ten commandments.  These are the basis of who they are and how they live in relationship with God and one another.  When they became unfaithful and sinned, God called them back again and again.  His love and mercy endures forever.

A few weeks ago there was a report about Bishop Tobin of Rhode Island who told a Catholic legislator in his diocese not to receive Holy Communion because of his support and protection of abortion rights.  Holy Communion is not a reward because we are good, but food for the journey through life as followers of Jesus in the Catholic Church.  We preface our reception of Holy Communion by praying: Lord I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I will be healed.  If we have committed a serious sin we need to seek God’s mercy and forgiveness in the Sacrament of Confession before we approach the Sacrament of Holy Communion.  In our nation, public opinion and the decision of the Supreme Court on January 22, 1973 have made abortion legal.  Public opinion and acts by legislators cannot change the basic truths of who we are as Catholics and who we are as human beings.  The fifth commandment clearly states: You shall not kill.  Abortion clearly takes the life of a child growing in the womb.  The truth is you cannot say you are Catholic and defend, promote or advise abortion.  Such a Catholic is in a serious state of sin and on the road to eternal damnation.  Those who follow such people put their personal salvation at risk.  We do not talk a lot about sin today, but it is a reality.  The havoc it causes continues to bring suffering.  We experience that when we know in our hearts that we have sinned and refuse to repent.  Allowing public officials who tout their Catholicism and promote abortion to receive Communion is a contradiction and a source of scandal.  Holy Communion, besides enabling us to have the Body of Christ within us, says we are in communion with Jesus and his Church.  To disagree and disregard a vital belief such as the sanctity of life in the womb takes one out of communion.

The news reports about what Bishop Tobin did were accompanied by the opinions of people on the street.  Of course they like to quote those who say they are Catholic.  One quote said, “There are a lot of people who take communion and are pro-choice.  He should be allowed to take it.  He has a right to his opinion.”  Everyone has a right to his or her opinion, but public opinion does not determine the truth.  We don’t learn from history.  Satan tempted Adam and Eve by telling them that if they did what God told them not to they would be like God.  The first commandment says: “I am the Lord your God, you shall not have strange gods before me.”  As much as we are impressed with our intelligence, abilities and technologies as human beings, we must remember that we are human, not divine.  God did not negotiate the ten commandments.  They are called commandments, not suggestions.

Legislators who call themselves Catholic and promote, defend and support abortion are dealing with serious sin.  We cannot allow ourselves to be fooled by their false sense of authority, identity and power.  Too many people have already been misled, so many who are Catholic.  We cannot impose Catholicism on America, but we must defend ourselves against those who say they are one with us and promote disunity, evil and death through abortion.  Those legislators do not have the integrity or courage to defend what we believe as Catholics on this issue and do not have the integrity or courage to say they are not Catholic.  At best they are Catholics in serious sin, promoting the death of the most innocent among us and leading some away from the truth.  We used to say people like that were on the road to hell - that seems like an accurate description now.  They are major obstacles we face in our Church and world today.
