 Congratulations Deacon John Ryan!

(Top Row)  John Ryan took a significant step in his journey to the priesthood on Tuesday, December 8th, the feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  He and four others were ordained deacons at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception.  John served his pastoral year here at St. Patrick’s.  He is set to be ordained on June 12th.

We mark the Second Week of Advent

A Message from Msgr. Walden Regarding Changes Due to the Flu Season

Blessed with the gift of faith, we come to mass each week and sometimes every day for our spiritual nourishment and spiritual health.  With the current concern about the flu season coming and the swine flu, we need to be prudent and take steps to make sure we are doing what we can to prevent the spread of germs at our masses and gatherings.  In reflecting on this situation and talking with many people, including our Parish Council, we will make some temporary changes in what we do at mass and in our church until the flu season is over.  We have ordered hand sanitizers for each of the doors in the church which anyone can use who enters or leaves the church.  During this time we will not offer the Precious Blood from the cup, since many mouths touch the cup for the reception of the Blood of Christ.  We will install a hand sanitizer on the wall in back of the altar and all those distributing communion will wash their hands before and after they distribute the Body of Christ in the hosts.  At the sign of peace we encourage you to turn to the people next to you who are not your family and nod with your head and say, “Peace be with you.”  At the end of mass the priests will be at the door and greet you.  If you wish to shake our hands that is fine.  Know that we will wash our hands frequently.  These are temporary measures for good health and concern for one another.  As soon as the flu season is over we will return to our present practices.

The economic crisis has been a major setback for all of Long Island.  At no other time has your generous support Reach for a Star been needed more.  Therefore, for the benefit of the underprivileged children of Mastic Beach, Brentwood, Central Islip, Mother and Unborn Child, The Ministries, LifeNet and our own hurting families, we encourage you to Reach for a Star on our Christmas trees inside the church and lobby this week.  All gifts must be in by December 13th to make distribution efficient and orderly. We ask you to pick a star, buy the gift, wrap it and tape the star on top and then place the gift on the Altar either December 5th/6th or December 12th/13th weekend.  At Toys “R” Us in Lake Grove, you may purchase the item on your star, tax free.  Please refer to our full page letter in last week’s bulletin.  We know you will respond with the same enthusiasm and generosity that made the project such an overwhelming success in previous years.  God bless you.

Rainbows and Spectrum

Today in the United States, there are more than 20 million children living in a single parent family - more than that if you include those children in a step-family.  That is 1 in every 3 in our classrooms!  In time to come many more children will have had to cope with the anguish of losing one of their parents through death, divorce or being born out of wedlock.

Children learn from their hearts upward; thus, if a child hurts emotionally, he/she often has difficulty in school.  In addition, statistics already show that a vast majority of these grieving children are turning to drugs, alcohol and even suicide as a means of coping.

Through the support group, we hope to assist the child in expressing and understanding his/her feelings, feel acceptance for what has happened, and to feel a sense of belonging and love.  Because we are unable to answer their questions or solve their problems, we strive to accomplish this through the channels of peer support, nurturing adults to guide them, and a secure place to share themselves.

St. Patrick Parish Outreach is proud to announce the start of another year of Rainbows and Spectrum (the High School level).  Registration is now taking place.  Call Parish Outreach at 265-2668 for further information.

Fr. Walden

From the Pastor's Desk:

In our spiritual call to prepare for Christmas during this season of Advent, we are more than halfway there. How prepared are we for Christmas? This is a hectic time. The pace dramatically picked up the day after Thanksgiving with ads and store openings in the early hours of the morning. How interesting that this day is now called “Black Friday” by the media and advertisers. They work to make us think how important it is to spend and buy for others and even ourselves. The economy is not healthy. Instead of seeing our preparation for Christmas as a financial struggle, this situation can actually take away the obstacles, distractions and anxiety that keep us from seeing what is essential to celebrate Christmas - a heart filled with gratitude for what God has done for us in Jesus. The gift of Jesus is what inspires to give to one another. Any gift we give is merely a sign of the internal love we have for the recipient. When we slow down we come to see the path to find the peace and joy Jesus came to bring into our world and into our lives.

In the book, “Crossing the Desert” by Robert Wicks, the following passage is very thought provoking and encouraging as we prepare for Christmas: “Simplicity also allows us to more readily recognize when our ego is seducing us or how the culture in which we live is trying to sell us on something that it believes will make us happy - if we buy it! Simplicity also allows us to be a little less busy, a bit more relaxed. We can be active without being preoccupied, pulled down or exhausted by what we are doing. Burnout isn’t caused by the amount of work we do as much as by how we view that work. When we are motivated by fear - of failure, of people making fun of us, or of losing something we erroneously believe we need for happiness - we are more likely to burn out. Simplicity is truly the gift that keeps on giving because it allows us to be in a position to see everything as a gift and not to be worried about what is unnecessary or by things that we encounter that are beyond our control.”

In today’s gospel people are responding to John the Baptist’s message by asking, “What should we do?” That is a question that runs through our minds, especially in difficult moments. It also runs through our minds as we consider Christmas gifts, cards, visits and gatherings. What is the appropriate gift? As I said at the beginning of this column, who we are is the gift. Whatever we give will hopefully remind the recipient of our goodness and love. At times we give because we don’t want to disappoint those who give us a gift. We can also give because we don’t want others to be upset or think ill of us. The best way to prepare for Christmas is to open our minds and hearts to the presence of Jesus with his goodness and love. Touched by that love we are filled with gratitude and joy and feel the Spirit of God urging us to express our love with generosity, mercy, and compassion. We respond in practical ways as the parish family of St. Patrick’s with donations of food at Thanksgiving and buying gifts through the “Reach for a Star” program. They are real and vibrant signs of how we are seeking to give as Jesus has given himself to us. We are living the trust Jesus has in us to be gifts for one another.

As we consider the gift of ourselves for Christmas, I conclude with the following thought from Wick’s book: “How do people feel when we are with them? Do they feel our need to control, our desire to be appreciated or followed, our need to be liked or seen as bright, attractive, wise or holy? Do they feel this openness and place of safety where they can rest their doubts, problems, and concerns, or do they feel our own anxiety, stress and defensiveness? What do they feel? If we are filled with ourselves or the desire to be famous, powerful or even effective (as enjoyable as having this wish be granted may be), then we lack the essential ingredient, either humility, ordinariness, or in some traditions, emptiness.”
