Second Sunday in Lent

 Celebrate Lent!

St. Patrick’s Parish offers many opportunities to take advantage of the graces offered in our preparations for the coming of the risen Lord.  Click here to learn more.

RCIA - Rite of Sending Forth & Rite of Election

(Top 4 Rows)  Lent is not only the season where we prepare for the resurection of our Lord, it is also the season where we prepare to receive our RCIA Candidates and Catachumens into full communion with our Church.  Last Sunday, February 21st, Catechumens, adults and children (who have reached the age of reason) seeking to be baptized gathered with together at the Rite of Sending Forth (Top Photo) during the 10:30 AM Mass at St. Patrick’s.  During this celebration the Catechumens were blessed and acknowledged by Fr. Patrick, and were “Sent Forth” to “Rite of Election.” The Rite of Election (Row 2) was held at St. Anne’s of Brentwood later that Sunday, where with Bishop William Murphy (3rd Row, Left) presided over the service with our and other catechumens from parishes all over Suffolk County.  Having been  presented to the bishop and having signed the Book of the Elect, our catechumens are now considered “the Elect.”  This Sunday, February 28th, our RCIA candidates (those already baptized) will celebrate the Rite of Sending Forth at the 10:30 AM Mass.  They then will attend the Call to Continuing Conversion at St. Anne’s in Brentwood with candidates from all over Suffolk County.  Please pray for all our RCIA participants as they prepare to receive sacraments at the Easter Vigil.

 Listening Session Report to Parishioners

Our Pastoral Council has composed a Report to Parishioners from the most recent Listening Session.  The report is now available for download here. or hard copies are available at the rectory.

Lenten Regulations:
Abstinence & Fasting

All Catholics who have reached their 14th year are bound to abstain entirely from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent.  All Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59, inclusive, are also bound to observe the law of fast on Ash Wednesday & Good Friday.  This means limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals.  Two other light meals, which together do not equal a full meal, may be taken during the day.

The obligation to do penance and to observe the appointed penitential season is a serious one.  Those whose work or health would be impaired are excused from fast and abstinence.  Individual conscience should decide proper cause for excuse.  A more serious reason is required to excuse oneself from Ash Wednesday and Good Friday fast and abstinence.

Parish Lenten Project:

For this year’s Lenten Project, we are turning our attention to those in our area who are struggling in this tough economy to pay for basic necessities.  Your contributions will help those unable to pay:

Utilities   -   Rent   -   Mortgage   -   Oil   -   Gas

Our Parish Outreach Office is working hard to assist the many familes facing financial hardship.  You can help by placing contributions in the “house containers” at the church exits.  Help keep people in their homes and help the many families in need through these tough economic times.

Church Envelopes Tips on Church Envelopes Use
& Faith Direct

In order to ensure an accurate record of your contributions to the parish, please place your donation in your church envelope and write the amount in the space provided.  If you lose or forget your envelope, please place your contribution in one of the temporary envelopes found in the pews (or in any envelope) and write your name, address, envelope number and the amount of your contribution on the outside.  If you do not receive envelopes on a monthly basis, call the rectory and we will be glad to order them for you.

Faith Direct

St. Patrick’s also offers parishioners the convenience of contributing through automatic deductions via Faith Direct. Our church number is NY51. .

Signing up for our automated giving program, Faith Direct is simple.  You can sign up online by going to www.faithdirect.net or stop by the rectory for a form to fill out and mail to Faith Direct. You may also call them at 866-507-8757.  When registering for the program, you will be asked for our church number which is:  NY51. Below are some frequently asked questions about Faith Direct.

How does Faith Direct work?  This secure program works directly with your bank, in the same way as other electronic funds transfer systems you may already conduct (such as utility bills or your mortgage payment).  All transactions are done electronically, debiting your bank account or charging your credit card automatically for the amount to which you have agreed in writing.  It is a hassle free, simple solution for today’s busy families.

Can any additional funds be taken from my account other than what I have authorized?  No!  The Faith Direct program is strictly regulated, and only you can designate the amount of money that may be debited on a monthly basis.  The Social Security Administration processes direct deposits of benefit payments for more than 18 million people each month, and not a single one has ever been lost.

Can I stop, increase or decrease my payment at any time?  Yes, you can contact Faith Direct by calling us toll-free at 1-866-507-8757, or by using our email form.  You can also make changes by accessing your account online.

How does my church benefit from my participation in Faith Direct?  Your church will see a substantial increase in net revenue, a decrease in administrative costs, and a clearer picture of cash flow for your church’s needs.

I would feel strange not placing a check or envelope in the offering basket, what should I do?  We realize that the offertory collection is an important part of church services.  For those enrolled with Faith Direct we provide “offertory cards” to drop in the collection basket as a visible sign of your electronic donations.

Catholic Ministries Appeal

2010 Catholic Ministries Appeal

The Hands of Christ-supporting the Community Around Us

Did you know...Next to the Federal Government, the Catholic Church is the leader in providing educational, charitable and social services?  Help continue these much needed services on Long Island with a gift to the Catholic Ministries Appeal.  Thanks to the generosity of 346 of our parish families, $74,914.00 has been pledged to the appeal.  One hundred percent of the dollars raised through the Appeal go to the following ministries: Catholic Charities, Pastoral Outreach, Education, Parishes, and Formation.

Catholic Minististries supports many activities and programs in the church, the communitity and the world. These include Education in our various elementary and high schools; Formation for religious instruction and guidance for our children, adult parishioners, those newly entering our faith and our various Seminarians; our Parishes; Catholic Charities; and Pastoral Outreach.
Please consider making a gift to this program that supports our church, our faith, our community and our world.

Fr. Walden

From the Pastor's Desk:

Each year at this time I speak to you about our parish financial condition and what we need to do together to continue all the programs and services we provide to one another.  Thanks to your continued support with time, talent and money we are able to do many things for and with one another.  My task as pastor is not to raise millions of dollars and sock as much as possible away for a rainy day, but to do everything I can to make sure we are operating in the black and are able to meet the needs we have as the family of St. Patrick’s parish.  Many of you have probably read reports in the paper about the financial plight of our diocese.  According to those working on the situation the diocese will run out of money by the end of this year if changes are not made.  One report in the paper said about 100 of the 133 parishes in our diocese are in financial trouble.  At the moment we are financially healthy.  Our proposed budgets for the fiscal year that goes from September 1, 2009 to August 31, 2010 show a surplus for both the parish and the school.  Our parish budget projects an income of $2,993,600 and expenditures of $2,936,850, giving us a surplus of $56,750.  Our parish school budget projects an income of $2,279,500 and expenditures of $2,259,850, giving us a surplus of $19,650.  Part of the budget includes working on paying off the $1,500,000 we borrowed in 2005 to pay for the new church and renovation of the old church into a gym.  At this point we still owe $280,000.  The ability to pay off this debt is a tribute to your generosity and support.  We have been able to not only keep everything going, but have also been able to efficiently pay down the debt.  That also reduces the interest.  At the moment we have $130,129 in savings.  That is not a lot of money in reserve for all the buildings and problems with them that periodically occur.  Five years ago, we had to put a new roof on the main part of the school which cost $180,000.  Adding the number of full time and part time employees in the parish and the school, together we have more than 90 people on the payroll.  Ours is a large parish with many facets.  We serve thousands and need the continued support of everyone who can help.

I realize these are difficult economic times.  Many people are out of work and are having difficulty making ends meet.  Our support of the Parish Outreach Office continues to bring hope, comfort and real help to those who come to us.  In order to keep everything going I ask that if possible you continue to make your weekly donations.  If we can keep the collections at the current level we will get by.  If you can increase your donation a little bit, that would be very helpful.  The prime change I ask you to consider is to use the automated giving program Faith Direct we instituted here a few years ago.  Please take the time to read the information about it in the bulletin or on this page and give it a try.  We investigated Faith Direct with the parish council which includes a lawyer and a banker, and found it to be safe, secure and in favor of the parish.  It is very easy to sign up on the internet or by filling out a form available at the rectory.  You can adjust your donations at any time.  I use it and no longer have to think about whether I made my donation for the week.  They also send you cards to put in the collection each week when the basket is passed.  Each week we get about $4,200 in the collection from those who use Faith Direct.  This money comes in whether you are at church or not.  At times we travel, are sick or are stuck by a snowstorm.  Through these and all other times we are not able to be here, the bills and expenses remain the same.  They even increase when there is more work to be done to remove the snow and ice.  Donations made through Faith Direct give us more security that we will be able to meet our expenses in the budget for the year.  As you are aware, we are always here for you.  To keep that constant presence does require monetary support.  So, again, please consider signing up with Faith Direct.  At this point we have 180 families using this program.  If everyone used it, we would no longer have the expense of paying for the weekly envelopes and mailing them to you.  Faith Direct has all the safeguards to make sure your information and donations are safe and secure.  Many of you already make payments by electronically transferring money from your bank account or credit card.  It is easy and efficient.  Please consider using the same method to support the parish financially.

Thank you for all that you do and for your continued support and concern.  This is a huge parish with a large number of activities, programs and services.  All of this is a reality because we give life to one another as the parish family of St. Patrick.  I am amazed, humbled and grateful by all that we are able to do together.  Know that I pray for all the people of our parish three times each day.  As I pray for God’s blessing on us, I thank God for the blessing that you are.
