Fifth Sunday in Lent

 Celebrate Lent!

St. Patrick’s Parish offers many opportunities to take advantage of the graces offered in our preparations for the coming of the risen Lord.  Click here to learn more.

The St. Patrick Day Dinner Dance

(Rows 1 thru 3)  When your parish is named after St. Patrick, it should only follow that his feast day is properly celebrated.  That was the case on Friday, March 12th as the St. Patrick School Parent-Teacher Partnership sponsored our annual St. Patrick’s Day Dinner Dance.  This year, in honor of the Year of the Priest, our parish priests - past, present and future - were recognized.

RCIA Second Scrutiny: Kids, Tweens and Teens

(Rows 4 & 5)  Fr. Patrick lead our parish and articipants in our Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults and RCIA Adapted for Children programs in the second of the three Scrutinies during the 10:30 AM Mass, on Sunday, March 14th, 2010.  This week we take some time to appreciate the youth in the RCIA Adapted for Children program. These are kids, tweens and teens who have not received all three of the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation.) This program is lead by Nick and Marie Reeber (Row 5, left-most and right-most), with assistance and guidance from Becky Reilly (3rd from the right.)  Our prayers and thanks to our team leaders and our young candidates.

Catholic Daughters St. Patrick Day Bake Sale

(Row 6)  On the weekend of March 14th, the Catholic Daughters held their annual bake sale after all Saturday and Sunday Masses. Fr. Fred also fired up the rectory ovens to provide many of the traditional holdiay fare, such as Irish Soda Bread.

 Girl Scouts Religious Awards

(Row 7)  Girl Scouts from our parish received religious awards at the 5 PM Family Mass on Saturday, March 17th.  The Ave Maria, Family of God and Regina Coeli  Awards were presented.  Recipients of the Marian  Award were also recognized.  The Marian Award is presented at a ceremony at St. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Centre.  Congratulations to all!

 Listening Session Report to Parishioners

Our Pastoral Council has composed a Report to Parishioners from the most recent Listening Session.  The report is now available for download here. or hard copies are available at the rectory.

Lenten Regulations:
Abstinence & Fasting

All Catholics who have reached their 14th year are bound to abstain entirely from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent.  All Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59, inclusive, are also bound to observe the law of fast on Ash Wednesday & Good Friday.  This means limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals.  Two other light meals, which together do not equal a full meal, may be taken during the day.

The obligation to do penance and to observe the appointed penitential season is a serious one.  Those whose work or health would be impaired are excused from fast and abstinence.  Individual conscience should decide proper cause for excuse.  A more serious reason is required to excuse oneself from Ash Wednesday and Good Friday fast and abstinence.

Lenten Project House

Parish Lenten Project:

For this year’s Lenten Project, we are turning our attention to those in our area who are struggling in this tough economy to pay for basic necessities.  Your contributions will help those unable to pay:

Utilities   -   Rent   -   Mortgage   -   Oil   -   Gas

Our Parish Outreach Office is working hard to assist the many familes facing financial hardship.  You can help by placing contributions in the “house containers” at the church exits.  Help keep people in their homes and help the many families in need through these tough economic times.

Church Envelopes Tips on Church Envelopes Use
& Faith Direct

In order to ensure an accurate record of your contributions to the parish, please place your donation in your church envelope and write the amount in the space provided.  If you lose or forget your envelope, please place your contribution in one of the temporary envelopes found in the pews (or in any envelope) and write your name, address, envelope number and the amount of your contribution on the outside.  If you do not receive envelopes on a monthly basis, call the rectory and we will be glad to order them for you.

Faith Direct

St. Patrick’s also offers parishioners the convenience of contributing through automatic deductions via Faith Direct. Our church number is NY51. .

Signing up for our automated giving program, Faith Direct is simple.  You can sign up online by going to www.faithdirect.net or stop by the rectory for a form to fill out and mail to Faith Direct. You may also call them at 866-507-8757.  When registering for the program, you will be asked for our church number which is:  NY51. Below are some frequently asked questions about Faith Direct.

How does Faith Direct work?  This secure program works directly with your bank, in the same way as other electronic funds transfer systems you may already conduct (such as utility bills or your mortgage payment).  All transactions are done electronically, debiting your bank account or charging your credit card automatically for the amount to which you have agreed in writing.  It is a hassle free, simple solution for today’s busy families.

Can any additional funds be taken from my account other than what I have authorized?  No!  The Faith Direct program is strictly regulated, and only you can designate the amount of money that may be debited on a monthly basis.  The Social Security Administration processes direct deposits of benefit payments for more than 18 million people each month, and not a single one has ever been lost.

Can I stop, increase or decrease my payment at any time?  Yes, you can contact Faith Direct by calling us toll-free at 1-866-507-8757, or by using our email form.  You can also make changes by accessing your account online.

How does my church benefit from my participation in Faith Direct?  Your church will see a substantial increase in net revenue, a decrease in administrative costs, and a clearer picture of cash flow for your church’s needs.

I would feel strange not placing a check or envelope in the offering basket, what should I do?  We realize that the offertory collection is an important part of church services.  For those enrolled with Faith Direct we provide “offertory cards” to drop in the collection basket as a visible sign of your electronic donations.

Catholic Ministries Appeal

2010 Catholic Ministries Appeal

The Hands of Christ-supporting the Community Around Us

Did you know...Next to the Federal Government, the Catholic Church is the leader in providing educational, charitable and social services?  Help continue these much needed services on Long Island with a gift to the Catholic Ministries Appeal.  Thanks to the generosity of 346 of our parish families, $74,914.00 has been pledged to the appeal.  One hundred percent of the dollars raised through the Appeal go to the following ministries: Catholic Charities, Pastoral Outreach, Education, Parishes, and Formation.

Catholic Minististries supports many activities and programs in the church, the communitity and the world. These include Education in our various elementary and high schools; Formation for religious instruction and guidance for our children, adult parishioners, those newly entering our faith and our various Seminarians; our Parishes; Catholic Charities; and Pastoral Outreach.
Please consider making a gift to this program that supports our church, our faith, our community and our world.

Fr. Walden

From the Pastor's Desk:

In his poem, “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” John Donne says, “No man is an island, entire of itself.  Each is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.”  As human beings we are social people, connected to one another in many ways.   The tragedy of the earthquakes in Haiti and Chile moved our hearts with concern and a desire to reach out.  The problems of some people are the problems of all.  In the Church we are not islands as individuals or parishes.  We are part of the “main.”  The “main’ in this case has many meanings.  First of all we are part of more than 2,000 years of Christianity.  From humble beginnings in the Holy Land, the church today is worldwide and is comprised of more than one billion people.  Right here in St. Patrick’s we are blessed with the presence of two priests from another continent.  Both Fr. Desmond and Fr. Anselm come from Nigeria in Africa.  Without them we would not be able to offer all the services and liturgies we currently have.  They are our brothers in the “main,” the “one, holy catholic and apostolic Church” we say we believe in each Sunday when we profess our faith by proclaiming the creed together.  Our common faith makes us one with God and with each other.

Another part of the “main” we belong to is the Diocese of Rockville Centre.  Together with the 133 parishes throughout Suffolk and Nassau Counties we are more than 1.5 million strong.  In addition to the parishes, there are more than sixty other institutions and organizations that serve our needs and the needs of all who come to us.  One of the integral and key ways the apostolic work of the church in our diocese is supported is through the annual Catholic Ministries Appeal.   One hundred percent of the money donated goes to five areas: Formation, Education, Catholic Charities, Pastoral Outreach and Parish Share.  The following is a quote from the brochure for this year’s appeal and is a good summary of the work of the “main” we are doing as the Diocese of Rockville Centre: “Every year, through the support and commitment of individuals and organizations, we serve more than 500,000 people in our Long Island Community.  This support enables our children to continue to receive the gift of spiritual formation, sacramental preparation, and quality education.  It allows seminarians, deacons and lay leaders to fulfill their calling to serve their community.  With your support, Catholic Charities can maintain its services for the poor and disadvantaged, and we can continue to reach out to our young people and others to find the best ways to guide and pass on our faith from generation to generation.”

This weekend I am speaking briefly after communion to ask your support for this vital and life-giving work of the Church (you and I) right here on Long Island.  I am very aware of your generosity to our parish and other causes presented for your help.  Our support of the Catholic Ministries Appeal directly helps more than half a million people.  As a parish priest I can tell you that people come to us when they are down and out.  Many people are suffering in these difficult economic times.  Our culture continues to bombard us, especially our young people, with examples of greed and encouragement to take care our all our wants, needs and whims first.  Our daily commitment to live our faith is not always easy, but is a source of hope for ourselves and all whose lives we touch.  As the church on Long Island we touch the lives of countless people, most of whom we will never meet.  But through our support of the Catholic Ministries Appeal they know our love, concern and goodness.  In a later verse in his poem I quoted above, John Donne says, “For I am involved in mankind.” Our love and concern makes a difference and makes the Good News real and concrete.  Please join with me in making a pledge or donation to the Catholic Ministries Appeal. There is a form in today’s bulletin or online via the Catholic Ministries Appeal section of this home page for your convenience.  Whatever you can do will be very helpful.  If each family could give a dollar or even fifty cents a day, we will meet our goal of $150,000.  That is a large sum on top of everything else we are supporting right here at St. Patrick’s.  But we are part of the “main.”

There have been articles about the dire situation we are facing financially in the diocese.  Being of service to one another takes time, talent and money.  I again ask your support for the crucial work we are doing as the church right here on Long Island.

  • Called to reach out to the unchurched and the non-practicing members of our community and to assist in the spiritual, intellectual and social growth of all whose lives we touch.
