The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

 Volunteer Thank You Party

(Rows 1 thru 3)  Each and every year the staff of St. Patrick’s parish treat all parish parish volunteers to a night out.  On the evening of Friday, May 28th, music, dancing, food and very good company were enjoyed by hundreds of our amazing volunteers.

Thank you to the many people who unselfishly give of their time to benefit the people of our parish!

 Memorial Day

(Rows 4 thru 6)  St. Patrick’s Parish celebrated Memorial Day with a Mass at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in the morning and paritcipated in the Smithtown Memorial Day Parade. The Parade is sponsored each year for the Smithtown Community by the our own Holy Mother Mary Council of the Knights of Columbus.  Pictured at right, Fr. Walden, Grand Knight Ed Masak and Fr. Patrick Riegger headed the parade along with the Knights of Columbus. Our parish was also well represented in the parade by the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts, Columbiettes, Catholic Daughters and the St. Patrick’s Village of the Branch Soccer Club.

Marion Medals awarded to Girl Scouts

(See Below)  Five young St. Patrick parishioners and members of Cadette Troop 292 recently received the Marion Medal in a ceremony at St. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Center.  The Marion Award gives Girl Scouts the opportunity to look at personal values, approaches to life, relationships with God and the opportunity to grow in faith.

St Patrick’s of Smithtown

Welcome to the Parish

Come and Celebrate!

Sunday, June 13th
Deacon John Ryan’s
Priestly Ordianation and First Mass

Transitional Deacon John Ryan served his pastoral year as a seminarian here at St. Patrick’s.  He quickly became a much loved member of our parish family.  On Saturday, June 12th, Deacon John will be ordained to the priesthood.  The Service will take place at 10:30 AM in the Cathedral in Rockville Center.  It will also be televised on Telecare.  His First Mass will take place here at St. Patrick’s on Sunday, June 13th at 12 Noon with a reception to follow in Canning Hall.  All are invited to come and celebrate!

Tuesday, June 15th
Fran Blagar’s Retirement Open House

Twenty-seven years ago, St. Patrick’s Pastor, Fr. John Mott, encouraged one of our parishioners with experience in business to head a new entity at St. Patrick’s - Parish Outreach.  Since then, under the direction Fran Blagar, Parish Outreach has grown to offer a huge range of programs to help those in need.  Fran will retire at the end of June.  An Open House will be held in the Parish Outreach Center on Tuesday, June 15the from 12:30 PM to 5 PM.  All are invited to stop by and thank Fran for her years of dedicated service.

Sunday, June 20th
Final Mass and Good-bye Reception
for Fr. Patrick Riegger

Job promotions are something to celebrate, but this one is bittersweet.  At the end of June, Fr. Patrick Riegger will leave St. Patrick’s to become pastor at Infant Jesus Parish in Port Jefferson.  In his five years as associate pastor here, Fr. Patrick has been a kind and compassionate presence that made so many feel loved and accepted.  His enthusiasm for everything from Friday Football and Altar Servers to RCIA, Knights of Columbus, and Catholic Daughters (not to mention the Mets and Jets) will be greatly missed.  Our parish will say a formal good-bye to Fr. Patrick on Sunday, June 20th (Father’s Day) at the 12 Noon Mass.  A reception will follow in Canning Hall.  Be sure to come and wish Fr. Patrick all the best.

Church Envelopes Tips on Church Envelopes Use
& Faith Direct

In order to ensure an accurate record of your contributions to the parish, please place your donation in your church envelope and write the amount in the space provided.  If you lose or forget your envelope, please place your contribution in one of the temporary envelopes found in the pews (or in any envelope) and write your name, address, envelope number and the amount of your contribution on the outside.  If you do not receive envelopes on a monthly basis, call the rectory and we will be glad to order them for you.

Faith Direct

St. Patrick’s also offers parishioners the convenience of contributing through automatic deductions via Faith Direct. Our church number is NY51. .

Signing up for our automated giving program, Faith Direct is simple.  You can sign up online by going to www.faithdirect.net or stop by the rectory for a form to fill out and mail to Faith Direct. You may also call them at 866-507-8757.  When registering for the program, you will be asked for our church number which is:  NY51. Below are some frequently asked questions about Faith Direct.

How does Faith Direct work?  This secure program works directly with your bank, in the same way as other electronic funds transfer systems you may already conduct (such as utility bills or your mortgage payment).  All transactions are done electronically, debiting your bank account or charging your credit card automatically for the amount to which you have agreed in writing.  It is a hassle free, simple solution for today’s busy families.

Can any additional funds be taken from my account other than what I have authorized?  No!  The Faith Direct program is strictly regulated, and only you can designate the amount of money that may be debited on a monthly basis.  The Social Security Administration processes direct deposits of benefit payments for more than 18 million people each month, and not a single one has ever been lost.

Can I stop, increase or decrease my payment at any time?  Yes, you can contact Faith Direct by calling us toll-free at 1-866-507-8757, or by using our email form.  You can also make changes by accessing your account online.

How does my church benefit from my participation in Faith Direct?  Your church will see a substantial increase in net revenue, a decrease in administrative costs, and a clearer picture of cash flow for your church’s needs.

I would feel strange not placing a check or envelope in the offering basket, what should I do?  We realize that the offertory collection is an important part of church services.  For those enrolled with Faith Direct we provide “offertory cards” to drop in the collection basket as a visible sign of your electronic donations.

Fr. Walden

From the Pastor's Desk:

Sixty-six years ago today one of the biggest military operations in our time took place - D-Day.  The Allied Forces landed on three beaches in France to begin the liberation of Europe from Hilter and his Third Reich.  As we remember this day we especially pray for those who did not live through that invasion.  They gave their lives and never came home to their loved ones.  Their ultimate sacrifice is an encouraging example that makes us grateful and inspires us to give of ourselves to our nation for the good of all.  Not only do we just enjoy the fruit of what they have done, it is our time to continue on with their spirit of sacrifice.

Today we celebrate another sacrifice that has touched the lives of billions of people - the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.  That sacrifice is made real and life giving to us each time Mass is celebrated.  Not only do we remember what Jesus has done and give thanks, we also have the opportunity to receive Him in the Eucharist.  His prayer, that we will be one with him and the Father, is answered as he enters our very bodies through the bread of life.  This food, which is Jesus himself, not only inspires and encourages us, but impels us to live and love fully as he did.  He enters our bodies physically, it is up to us to let him into our minds and hearts.  How wonderful our world would be if we all responded to the love and presence of God totally and completely.  When couples come in to arrange their weddings, I ask them if they go to Mass every week.  Frequently they say they do not.  My response is to tell them that if they love the person they are going to marry they need the help of God.  There is no better place to receive that help and strength to love than in the Eucharist.  I tell them that they want to love as best they can, but without the help of God they cannot.  To be the most loving husband and wife, as to be the best in any relationship and commitment of love, we need divine assistance.  After all, we are created in the image and likeness of God.  It is when we love that that image becomes real and life giving for ourselves and others.  Today’s gospel gives us the account of the multiplication of the loaves and fish according to St. Luke.  How stunning it had to be to hear Jesus tell them, “Give them something to eat yourselves.”  How will twelve men with a meager amount of food and probably not enough financial resources feed 5,000 people?  What Jesus is doing is pre- figuring what has taken place every time Mass has been celebrated since the Last Supper.  Countless people have been fed by Jesus himself in those 2,000 years.  We are blessed to be part of the Church and to encounter Jesus personally in this sacrament.  When Jesus says, “Give them something to eat yourselves,” he is expanding their horizon on how he expects them to love and how much love they are really capable of.  The potential, strength and ability to love is in each of us - again, we are created in the image of God.  But what is it that taps that potential and opens the floodgates so we can pour forth love?

Our celebration today reminds us that when we feed others with self-giving love, our love is never exhausted or used up.  Jesus on the cross seemed to be done loving.  There was no more opportunity left.  But there was!  His seven last words were words of love.  He was confined to the cross by nails, pinned immobile, but the love in his heart kept pouring out until the end.  At times when I look at the crucifix in our church, I think of how Jesus was trapped and confined on the cross.  But the message is that no matter where we are or who we are with, we have the resources and ability to love.  It is not always easy.  But what greater challenge will we face than Jesus on the cross on Calvary?  He did not feel sorry for himself or allow himself to feel trapped.

As we look at our lives we can see how we have done outstanding and even unbelievable things for those we love.  We were not tired and glad the experience was over, but grateful that we had the opportunity to love.  That is exactly what Jesus expects and is one with us as we do.  That is exactly what makes us fully alive.  We thank God for Jesus and his love.  We thank God for those who sacrifice for us personally and as a nation.  And we thank God for the trust and ability he has put in us to feed one another with our love.  Fed by the Body of Christ, we are the Body of Christ.
