The Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

 Congratulations!
 to the Class of 2010!

(Rows 1, 2 & 3)  Members of the St. Patrick School Class of 2010 attended Mass together for the last time at their Commencement Liturgy on Thursday, June 17th.  Graduation was held on Friday, June 18th. Our graduates will now head for various high schools.

Congratulations to all!

A St. Patrick’s Send-Off for Fr. Patrick Riegger

(Rows 4 & 5)  The 12 noon Mass on Sunday, June 20th, 2010, was the final weekend Mass as associate pastor for Fr. Patrick.  The Mass was followed by a reception in Canning Hall. Both the Mass and the reception were filled to capacity as hundreds of parishioners turned out in droves to say thank you and good-bye to Fr. Patrick Riegger. Fr. Patrick has now begun his new assignment as pastor at Infant Jesus Parish in Port Jefferson, NY.

St. Patrick’s Welcomes Fr. David Regan

(Rows 6, & 7)  Fr. David Regan began his duties as associate pastor at St. Patrick’s this week. Fr. Regan is pictured during his June 12th ordination, being prayed for by his predecessor in our parish, Fr. Patrick Riegger and gathering for a group photo with his fellow newly ordained priests and our Bishops.

 Knights of Columbus Scholarships Awarded

(Row 8)  On Tuesday, June 22nd, Holy Mother Mary Council of the Knights of Columbus, in conjunction with the family of Donald J. Burns, held its 8th annual scholarship awards night. The scholarships are given in memory of Holy Mother Mary Past Grand Knight, and Assistant Fire Chief of the F.D.N.Y, Donald J. Burns. He is one of the fallen heroes of the 9-11-01 tragedy. Students submitted essays on the topic of the “Year of the Priest.” Four $500 Scholarship were awarded for winning essays to two students attending Catholic High Schools, and two college students. On hand to present the awards were Dan Burns, Scholarship Committee Chairman, Deputy Grand Knight Frank Nealon, and Fr. Desmond. Congratulations to our winners: Karyn Carlson, Thomas Berry, Daniel Cummings, and Kathleen McCann!

 Changing of the Guard

(Row 9)  Fran Blagar, St. Patrick’s Director of Parish Outreach for the past 27 years, presented a name plate to Dianne Williams who will replace her as Outreach Director as of July 1st. Dianne has worked in Parish Outreach for 14 years. Nearly 300 people stopped by to wish Fran the best at an Open House held on June 15th, including our former pastor, Bishop Paul Walsh; Msgr. Robert Brennan, a former associate pastor at St. Patrick’s, now vicar general for the Diocese of Rockville Centre; and Town Supervisor Patrick Vecchio who presented Fran with a proclamation which made June 15, 2010 Fran Blagar Day in the Town of Smithtown.  Look further down this page for some reflections from Fran and more photos.

 From the Pastor’s Desk

Each week, Msgr. Walden writes his “From the Pastor’s Desk” message to the parish.  These include his reflections on the weekly readings, the faith, morality and the life of the parish.  His message can always be found at the bottom of our home page.  You may also click here to read Fr. Walden’s message...

St Patrick’s of Smithtown

Welcome to the Parish

Thank You From Fran Blagar

(Fran Blagar will retire as Director of Parish Outreach at the end of this month after 27 years of service.  On Tuesday, June 15th, an Open House was held giving parishioners and other friends a chance to thank Fran for her dedicated service to those most in need in our area.  Below is a thank you message from Fran.)

Wow, what a spectacular send-off!  I am still on Cloud Nine from the farewell open house on June 15th given in honor of my retirement.  The love I felt by your presence and expressed sentiments filled my heart with joy.

The surprise guests of Bishop Walsh, Msgr. Brennan and Supervisor Vecchio (presenting a Proclamation), touched me with a humble heart.  I was truly honored by their presence, as by Fr. Patrick’s kind words and plaque, our priests, sisters, staff, all Parish Outreach volunteers, recipients, friends through the years (both past and present parishioners). I thank each and every one of you!!!

Running this awesome tribute, I thank Marie & Joe Menge, Dianne Williams, Ed De Rose and all the volunteers – they have my undying appreciation for all the love they put into making this celebration so very special.  Marie’s creativity and talent in designing the billboards surrounded us with an atmosphere of joy (and just after the Lobster Fest on Friday).  Marie has collaborated with me on so many functions through the years; we can read each other’s mind.  She has raised thousands of dollars by her fundraising, helped every department in the parish with her ideas, support, hard work, enthusiasm, encouragement and love – she is an incredible lady – giving 110% to every project.  She loves this parish and all the people whose lives she touches.

Joe is her support in all her volunteer work, working behind the scenes and doing anything that needs to be done with extreme patience and not a word of complaint.  Beside which, being our Business Manager keeping us afloat financially is not a small task.  We are very blessed to have them both as part of our parish family and I am blessed to call them “friend.”

Dianne Williams will be taking over Parish Outreach and I couldn’t be more pleased. She has been with us 14 years and knows the clients well.  Her compassion and kindness is a comfort to all.  I know I’m leaving the ministry in good hands – she has been my right hand, my partner, my family & friend.  Dianne and my volunteers added their love and energy making the party a huge success.

Ed De Rose was a pleasure to work with – our own private caterer doing his usual wonderful job.  He also was on the committee for the Lobster Fest, which was a huge success thanks to all the aforementioned.  Ed did all the food, which was delicious.

Fr. Walden, thank you for always being there for me – your support will always be remembered.  I would not have been able to run Parish Outreach without the faith and trust you have had in me.  Thank you also for the use of your garden - it was a perfect setting.  Thanks especially to Fr. Hill, who planted beautiful flowers and was so gracious to allow us to trespass.

To all of our Priests, Sisters, Staff and Parishioners – you’ve been a pleasure to work with.  I may be leaving my job, but my heart will always remain in St. Patrick’s and the community of Smithtown.

I am truly blessed to have so many wonderful people in my life.  To say “thanks” seems insufficient in comparison to what I feel in my heart.  Your support of Parish Outreach through the years, whether as a volunteer or through donations, shows that you are certainly Beatitude People.  Your compassion and love are evident in all the lives you touch thru Parish Outreach.  Your kindness is a tribute to the depth of your faith and I have been privileged to “Serve the Lord” and the people of God with you.  You are truly living testimony to the beautiful spirit of this parish and a gift to me personally.  I would never have been able to accomplish what we did without you.

There will be a Mass of Thanksgiving offered for your intentions on December 16th at 9 AM, as a token of appreciation for giving me the privilege to serve God and St. Patrick’s for so many years.

May the joy you give to others be returned to you a-thousand-fold.  I will miss you.  Truly you are Christ to His poor!

Church Envelopes Tips on Church Envelopes Use
& Faith Direct

In order to ensure an accurate record of your contributions to the parish, please place your donation in your church envelope and write the amount in the space provided.  If you lose or forget your envelope, please place your contribution in one of the temporary envelopes found in the pews (or in any envelope) and write your name, address, envelope number and the amount of your contribution on the outside.  If you do not receive envelopes on a monthly basis, call the rectory and we will be glad to order them for you.

Faith Direct

St. Patrick’s also offers parishioners the convenience of contributing through automatic deductions via Faith Direct. Our church number is NY51. .

Signing up for our automated giving program, Faith Direct is simple.  You can sign up online by going to www.faithdirect.net or stop by the rectory for a form to fill out and mail to Faith Direct. You may also call them at 866-507-8757.  When registering for the program, you will be asked for our church number which is:  NY51. Below are some frequently asked questions about Faith Direct.

How does Faith Direct work?  This secure program works directly with your bank, in the same way as other electronic funds transfer systems you may already conduct (such as utility bills or your mortgage payment).  All transactions are done electronically, debiting your bank account or charging your credit card automatically for the amount to which you have agreed in writing.  It is a hassle free, simple solution for today’s busy families.

Can any additional funds be taken from my account other than what I have authorized?  No!  The Faith Direct program is strictly regulated, and only you can designate the amount of money that may be debited on a monthly basis.  The Social Security Administration processes direct deposits of benefit payments for more than 18 million people each month, and not a single one has ever been lost.

Can I stop, increase or decrease my payment at any time?  Yes, you can contact Faith Direct by calling us toll-free at 1-866-507-8757, or by using our email form.  You can also make changes by accessing your account online.

How does my church benefit from my participation in Faith Direct?  Your church will see a substantial increase in net revenue, a decrease in administrative costs, and a clearer picture of cash flow for your church’s needs.

I would feel strange not placing a check or envelope in the offering basket, what should I do?  We realize that the offertory collection is an important part of church services.  For those enrolled with Faith Direct we provide “offertory cards” to drop in the collection basket as a visible sign of your electronic donations.

Fr. Walden

From the Pastor's Desk:

Whenever there is a Friday with no particular feast to celebrate at Mass, I celebrate the votive Mass of the Sacred Heart.  The human heart is a symbol of love, and there is no heart more loving than the Sacred Heart of Jesus.  In the preface we use at that Mass we hear the words: “From his wounded side flowed blood and water, the fountain of sacramental life in the Church.  To his open heart the Savior invites all people, to draw water in joy from the springs of salvation.”  From his life-giving heart we all receive the love of God over and over again.  There is no limit and his Heart is never emptied out.

When we are loved we respond with joy and gratitude.  Two weeks ago the gospel presented us with the sinful woman who went into the house of the Pharisee, where Jesus was dining and washed his feet with her tears and dried them with her hair.  Her experience of God’s loving mercy so filled her with gratitude that she did not care about what others said or thought.  The love Jesus had given to her was so powerful and life-giving that she welcomed the opportunity to express her thanks.  Each time we come to Mass we thank God for all he has given us, beginning with the gift of Himself in Jesus.  This gift of Himself is possible because we have been blessed with the gifts of faith and life.  Through the waters of baptism we have become the children of God.  Through the shedding of his blood our sins have been forgiven and we have been brought into the life of God.  True gratitude makes us humble because we recognize how much of a gift the love of God and others is.  Last Sunday Fr. Patrick thanked us for being able to serve us as a priest for the past five years.  He humbly made it clear that we are a gift to him and his priesthood.  He told us that these were five of the best years of his priesthood.  We have been on the receiving end of the goodness and love of his priestly ministry and are truly grateful to have been touched by God through him.  Humility enables us to see beyond what we work for to what we actually have because of the goodness and love of God and others.  Once we step outside of humility and operate out of self-satisfaction and pride we become restless and always have the feeling that something is missing in our lives.

Next Sunday in the gospel we will hear how the disciples went out in pairs to prepare the way for Jesus.  They came back from their mission filled with wonder and awe at all they had accomplished.  Humbly they recognized that what they accomplished was due to Jesus’ trust in them and his love for them.  United with him and one another, they did what they would never have thought possible on their own.  Again, that is the power of love making possible and desirable what we would never think of attempting on our own.  In today’s gospel Jesus makes the point that if we are going to follow him as he invited us to do in last Sunday’s gospel, we have to do it with our whole heart.  “No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God.”  That means so loving God and one another that we find ourselves fully alive and grateful for the gift of life.  Responding to God’s love with love, we are filled with gratitude and joy, and we look for more and more opportunities to love.  To love powerfully as Jesus did, humility is essential.  Our desire is simply to do good for God and others, regardless of the result or response.  In the spiritual book I am reading, there is a quote from Karl Rahner, S.J. that says, “You alone are the reader of hearts, O God, and how can I expect to understand the heart of another when I don’t even understand my own?”  Before we even attempt to look into our own hearts or the hearts of others, we are invited first to look into the Sacred Heart of Jesus and to be enlightened and enlivened by His love.  Touched by such a powerful heart full of love, we in turn respond not only with words and thoughts of gratitude, but also with the desire to love so fully ourselves. Each day we do wonderful and life-giving things for one another.  At times we do slip. It is then that we look into our hearts confused and disappointed in ourselves.  We are capable of such outstanding acts of love.  All we need to do is to humbly open ourselves to the love of God in the Sacred Heart of Jesus.  His love does not overwhelm or smother us, but opens our whole being to the joy of being loved so unconditionally. We then know the joy of being fully alive in God’s image and likeness and we respond with humble gratitude as we seek to love as he loves us.
