Lay Participation in the Holy Mass

The Laity groups - involved parishioners - perform vital roles in service of the Church and the Holy Mass.  Their work fully exemplifies the meaning of service to the Church.

Lay Participation

(in the Holy Mass)

  • Altar Servers
    • Parish altar servers assist with the celebration of the Liturgy.  These young volunteers are responsible for making sure everything needed for the ceremony is in its proper place.  They assist the celebrant during the Liturgy itself and make sure everything is put away once it is concluded.  More importantly, altar servers are afforded the opportunity to participate in the liturgical life of our parish in a meaningful way, giving praise and thanks to God for all He has done for them.  Training for altar servers takes place during a six-week period beginning in September.  It is open to boys and girls of the parish in fifth grade and up.

  • Lectors
    • Through the ministry of the lector, lay persons participate in the proclamation for the Word of God by publicly reading the Scriptures, intercessory prayers and pulpit announcements.  Lectors are assigned to all Masses (with the exception of the 6:45 AM Mass in which the Sisters of St. Joseph serve as lectors).  During the 9:00 AM Sunday Mass, youth lectors take on the job.

  • Ushers and Greeters
    • The Ushers/Greeters are a dedicated group of men and women who assist in our worship by helping the Mass run smoothly.  Their duties include greeting people, taking up the collection, directing people as they receive Communion and return to their seats, and distributing the bulletin as people exit from Mass.  Ushers are also called upon to be aware of the handicapped and assist them whenever necessary.  Ushers have helped St. Patrick's earn its reputation for hospitality.

  • Choir
    • The Adult Choir is made up of parishioneers ranging in age from teenagers to senior citizens.  The only requirement for membership is enthusiasm and a love of music.  The choir sings regularly at the Sunday 10:30 AM Mass and at other special Masses and events.  Rehearsals take place on Thursday evenings from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM at St. Patrick's.

  • Music Ministry
    • St. Patrick's Adult Choir, Folk Group and Children's Choir are the most visible part of the parish Music Ministry.  Yet the Music Ministry involves much more.  Music is provided for all Saturday and Sunday Masses (except 7:30 AM Sunday), as well as funerals, weddings, holy days and school Masses.  Music instruction for St. Patrick School students and the direction of the school choir is also handled by the Music Ministry.  All of these jobs are accomplished by a music director, classroom instructor and a cantorial staff.  Together, members of the Music Ministry enhance the Liturgy, encouraging us to lift our hearts, minds and voices to God.

  • Extraordinary Ministers
    • These dedicated volunteers distribute the Eucharist at scheduled Masses and visit our parishioners who are ill or for other reasons are not able to attend Mass.  Some of the ministers also bring the Eucharist and pray with parishioners in local hospitals and nursing homes.  Extraordinary ministers must be practicing Catholics in good standing that have the devotion and time to minister to the community regularly.

Social Ministry
Rainbows and Spectrum

Today in the United States, there are more than 20 million children living in a single parent family - more than that if you include those children in a step-family.  That is 1 in every 3 in our classrooms!  In time to come many more children will have had to cope with the anguish of losing one of their parents through death, divorce or being born out of wedlock.

Children learn from their hearts upward; thus, if a child hurts emotionally, he/she often has difficulty in school.  In addition, statistics already show that a vast majority of these grieving children are turning to drugs, alcohol and even suicide as a means of coping.

Through the support group, we hope to assist the child in expressing and understanding his/her feelings, feel acceptance for what has happened, and to feel a sense of belonging and love.  Because we are unable to answer their questions or solve their problems, we strive to accomplish this through the channels of peer support, nurturing adults to guide them, and a secure place to share themselves.

St. Patrick Parish Outreach is proud to announce the start of another year of Rainbows and Spectrum (the High School level).  Registration is now taking place.  Call Parish Outreach at 265-2668 for further information.
