Music Ministry

Anyone who attends Mass has probably had the experience of being uplifted, comforted, or inspired by the music.  St. Patrick's Music Ministry has a long history of providing parishioners with music to pray with, sing with, and listen to.  The goal has always been to help parishioners capture the true spirit and meaning of each Liturgy.

Music Ministry

This history includes the names of Organists (Emme Tiedermann, Sally Maher, Terry Gorman, Elaine Borrosh, Paul Elsener and Marge Smith), Cantors (Dout Sarchet, Dolores Teutonico, Richard Lukaschek, Toni Caporusso, Don and Marie Wisel, and Mary Cataldo), and Choir Directors (Phil Carney, Emme Tiedemann, Bob henessey, Sal Fiore, Georgia Lennins, Jack Beck, and Jim Carstens).  It also has included a variety of music - from songs to accompany the latin mass to Contemporarty Christian Music.

Perhaps the most visible members of Music Ministry are those belonging to its larger groups: The Adult Choir (under the direction of Andrea Modugno and Denise Podlewski), Folk Group (directed by Maureen Ramirez), and, at some Masses, the Children's Choir (directed by Mary Morrison).  Yet the job of St. Patrick's Music Ministry goes much further.  Music is provided for all the Saturday and Sunday Masses, as well as for funerals, weddings, Holy Days, and school Msses.

All this falls under the direction of Music Director and Organist James Moritz.  Jim has served as director since the Spring of 2000, when he replaced Dottie Black, who retired.  Jim is assisted by a cantorial staff that includes marilyn Webster, Frank Thompson, Gail Chiappino, Anna Poma, Anya Lundberg, and Eric Margiore.  During Christmas and Easter Liturgies in Canning hall, Frank Thompson, Joe Burton,a nd Ralph DeNome provide music.

In consideration of the Irish musical traditions of St. Patrick, several harpists have been retained for celebrations of our patron saint.

The instruction of St. Patrick School students also falls under the scope of Music Ministry.  Susan Thompson taught music at the school for several years, until she entered a religious order.  Her duties were then assumed by Julie Benkovsky (classroom instruction) and Jim Moritz (school choir).

Both pianos in the school were rebuilt during the 2001-2002 school year due to increased demands on these older instrumnets.  Plans were also made to refurbish the existing organ for transfer to the new church upon the completion of that structure.  During the year, several field trips were made by St. Patrick School students to performances of the Long Island Symphony and other musical events at Stony Brook and the Metropolitan Opera Guild.  School Tours visited and performed an operetta for the students.  All of these events were enthusiastically received by the children in attendance.

Throughout the next fifty years, with God's help, the Music Ministry will continue to meet the needs of the St. Patrick' Parish Family: Serving the Lord's people with gladness, enhancing the Liturgy, lifting our minds and hearts and voices to God in joy ... TOGETHER.
