Sacred Heart Prayer Group

Marie Wisel remembers attending a Sacred Heart Prayer Group meeting for the first time and thinking it was rather strange.  While she was no stranger to prayer, this was different - the singing, people raising their hands in praise, personal stories of how God has been at work in their lives, speaking in toungues.

Yet, Marie says, she could feel the presence of God in the room.  Having just last a baby, marie was experiencing feelings of fear.  As "fate" would have it, all the songs and scriptures seemed to be aimed at overcoming fear.

"I was in Church," Marie said, "but I kept thinking 'there's got to be more.'  This was the more."

Marie's husband, Don, on the other hand, was not a regular church goer.  his decision to join the group came as a result of the miracle birh of their son.  The Wisels had been told that their son had a serious illness.  After much prayer, he was born perfectly healthy.

Not only have the Wisels been attending theprayer group ever since, they have run it for the past 20 years.

The prayer group originnaly began in 1972 with only a few members and was headed by Paula and Patrick Billyard.  One night, when Paula was alone in the faculty room of the school prior to a meeting, she prayed that a religious would join the group inorder to give it credibility.  When she opened her eyes, there stood Sister Muriel Keegan.  As principal of St. Patrick School and a well respected member of the parish community, Sister Muriel gave validity to the group and more and more people began to attend.

Today, the Sacred Heart Prayer Group has about 70 members.  They meet on Tuesday nights in the Emmaus Room or in Keegan Hall.  A typical meeting includes worshipping God in song, sharing from scripture, sharing personal testimonies of God's work in people's lives, and prayers over people for healing of any type.  The prayer group also sponsors annual Life in the Spirit Seminars and a Healing Mass.

The goal, says Marie, is to "draw people into a personal relationship with God and help them realize that God cares for them as an individual person."

Through the years, hundreds of people have been through the prayer group, many beccoming active in various Church ministries.

"We see people being totally transformed," she said.  "They are on fire for God, like the Disciples at Pentecost."
