Baptism

With these words and the pouring of Holy Water on the children to be baptized, we have greeted another soul into the Body of Christ.  This Holy Rite of Baptism takes place every Sunday, with a few exceptions, at St. Patrick Church at 1;30 PM.  As a parish we try to prepare for and celebrate this Sacrament of Baptism ever mindful of the future faith development of our newest members.  When parents call the rectory to arrange for the baptism of their young ones, they are given a brochure that explains the procedure.  It urges careful selection of Godparents, i.e. practicing Catholics, whom the baptized can see as role models.

The preparation begins with an invitation to the parents to attend a Thursday evening meeting before the Baptism date.  At this meeting, the parents are asked to re-examine the meaning of faith in their lives, to reflect on the commitment they will be making for their child, and to familiarize themselves with the Rite of Baptism.

These meetings are usually conducted in the Emmaus Room by teams of Sisters and lay couples.  All the questions of the parents are answered.

For the Sunday celebratin, parents and family are asked to be at the church by 1:15 PM.  There are two greeters present to welcome and assist the families.  They also participate in providing appropriate music and serving as readers to aid the Celebrant.

Parents, grandparents, and friends are also encouraged to attend.  It is not unusual to see the celebration of this Sacrament touch those gathered in a way that rekindles their faith, as it reminds them of the origins of their gift of life and to what the Sacrament of Baptism calls us.

The Godparents are there not only as sponsors of the children, but also as representatives of the whole Christian community.

During the ceremony, a lovely white baptismal bib, a gift from the parish, is placed on the baptized child.  The baptismal candle is a gift from the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.  Both the bib and candle are reminders of the day the children recieved the most precious gift of all - the gift of Catholic faith.  This is the beauty of the Sacrament which parents are reminded requires constant care.

The rearing of a child is an awesome responsibility and we must realize that this miracle of life, this wonder of God's majesty, requires the need for God's continued grace, love and protection.
