St. Patrick School

St. Patrick School was blessed and dedicated by Bishop Walter P. Kellenberg in 1966.  The traditions of the congregation of St. Joseph, an order of religious nuns that have been educating on the island since 1856, set the direction that St. Patrick School would take.

Sister St. Catherine, the first principal of St. Patrick School, served for 5 years.  The school began with enough children to fill four grades, approximately 400 students.  Sister Muriel Keegan became principal in 1972, a position she held for twenty four years (See separate article) Set in the context of Christian example, the school continued to provide an excellent preparatory curriculum while leading children to assume thier roles in life as responsible adults.  Graduates of the St. Patrick School were prepared to lend witness to their beliefs and trust in Christ.

Sister Aquinata McGrath became principal in 1994.  Sister Aquinata had a great love for children, as she continues to have today.  She enjoyed working with them and faculty immensely.  During her two-year tenure as principal, she created an Early Childhood Center in the west wing, better known today as the "Happy Hallway." Sister Aquinata also initiated the first computer lab in the school, in Room 107.  Sister Aquinata initiated the New York State Learning Standards, a process which continues to be ongoing as instruction continues to change to emphasize student-centered learing.  All curriculum was reviewed and faculty grade level meetings were started.  Today Sister Aquinata continues to be a presence in St. Patrick School.  In September of 2001, she took the position of Director of Curriculum and Testing, three days a week.  She also continues to work for St. Joseph College, the Religious Education Program of St. Patrick Parish, and the Youth Community.  The children of St. Patrick School continue to be blessed by her devotion to them.

In 1997, Mrs. Eileen Sadicario became Principal of St. Patrick School.  It is a position which she considers a pleasure and a privilege, to be able to serve the school and parish community of St. Patrick's Mrs Sadicario continues to make St. Patrick's a place where all children feel welcome, secure and successful.  Her philosophy of education is child centered in every way.  TO this end, she instituted a full time Reading and Resource Room Program to meet the needs of the children.  Teacher assistants have been placed in many class rooms, to reduce the student - teacher ratio.  At all t imes, the children are welcome to come to Mrs. S. with any of their concerns or ideas.  As the parent of two daughters, Mrs Sadicario draws on her personal experience to nurture the children of St. Patrick's.
