St Patrick's of Smithtown
Pro-Life Family
(Taken from the 2002
St. Patrick's 50th Anniversary Journal)
This message from Pope John Paul II's Gospel of Life, is one that St.
Patrick's Pro-Life Family is working to promote.
The ministry was started in 1980 by Angie Daly, and a group of very
dedicated pro-life parishioners in response to the Supreme Court's
ill-fated Roe vs. Wade decision that legalized abortion on demand.
It began with 20 members.
Today, approximately 50 members make up the Pro-Life Family
ministry. The executive board and membership meet on the last
Tuesday of each month at St. Patrick School. On the third Tuesday
of each month, the Pro-Life Family participates in a Holy Hour of Prayer
which includes praying the Rosary, Exposition of the Most Blessed
Sacrament, and Benediction. Many members also gather peacefully
in front of the Planned Parenthood facility on Maple Avenue on
Wednesdays, between 7 AM and 11 AM, to pray the Rosary for an end to abortion.
The Pro-Life Family ministry also sponsors several annual events.
On or around Pro-Life Sunday in October, it hosts a Communion Breakfast.
We also participate in the “Stand up for Liferdquo; event in Huntington
in October. Each year on the January 22 anniversary of
the Roe vs. Wade decision, the Pro-Life Family sponsors a bus trip to
Washington D.C. to the National March for Life. Members also
participate in an annual Night of Prayer for Life with other parishes
across the country. In conjunction with the Diocese, the ministry
also sponsors an annual poster-essay contest for students.
Members also keep abreast of legislation affecting life issues, write
letters to elected officials, maintain a pro-life bookstand and video
library, and collect baby clothes and monetary gifts to assist families
experiencing unplanned pregnancies.
In recent years, young members of the parish have become more involved
through "Kids for Life." Participants in Kids for Life meet
every first Friday to attend Divine Mercy Benediction and work on an
outreach project. On the first Sunday of every month, Kids for
Life sponsors "Bottles for Babies" -- collecting money that
parishioners have received through recycling bottles and cans and
donating it to a pro-life organization that helps mothers and babies.
People become involved in the pro-life movement for various
reasons. For some, the reasons are very personal. One member
became involved after experiencing numerous miscarriages.
Through her own pain, she developed "a keen awareness that God is
the author of life, that only He can take a life, and that abortion is
diametrically opposed to God's law."
While it may seem that the fight to end legalized abortion is an
overwhelming one, the Pro-Life Family is making a difference.
Through their prayerful presence at Planned Parenthood, members were
able to provide assistance for a coule seeking help. After the
baby was born, they continued to provide gifts of clothing and money.
Members of the Pro-Life Family work to bring recognition of the sanctity
of life in many ways, but the emphasis is on prayer. They work to
bring "a greater understanding of the importance of a deeper prayer
life and of doing the will of God, even when it may not be the most
popular thing to do."
